Public Transport Woes

September 26th 2006 11:13
The government is pushing for people to use public transport instead of contributing to road congestion in Australian cities.

This is a good initiative that could potentially save millions of dollars by limiting the funding needed for our road infrastructure. It would also help the environment by reducing emissions

Steve Irwin’s Memorial Service Part II

September 23rd 2006 01:59
It’s so sad to see that the media doesn’t allow anything to get in the way of a good story.

With the memorial service held this week of Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, this was the lead story for mainstream media outlets

The Joys of Unemployment Part II

September 21st 2006 11:14
Who would have thought that a government institution in Australia would discriminate against people in a straight relationship or those living with someone of the opposite sex?

Well, it’s true

The Joys of Unemployment Part I

September 18th 2006 08:58
Being on unemployment benefits in this country is a joke. The whole purpose of receiving the unemployment should be that you are looking for a job.

But, the system hinders you in finding and securing a job. I can hear a lot of people out there saying, as if, the system forces you to look for work. In a way it does, but in another way it really limits you

Steve Irwin’s Memorial Service

September 13th 2006 06:44
It’s fitting that a public memorial service is being held for Steve Irwin. He was such a public figure not only in Australia but overseas.

However, I think it’s rude to force people to pay to go to his memorial service. His death shouldn’t lead to financial gain for his family, his business - Australia Zoo, or his Wildlife Warriors fund

September 11

September 11th 2006 09:39
Is anyone else sick of hearing about the terrorist attack in America on September 11, 2001?

Don’t get me wrong, it was a huge tragedy. But, why does the media have to run a story on this event every year

Our Netball Champions

September 6th 2006 08:20
It was really hard to understand why there was little coverage of this year’s Commonwealth Bank trophy winners. This trophy was awarded to the Sydney Swifts on Friday night, the winners of this year’s national netball competition.

The Sydney Swifts were the first team of any sporting code in nearly half a century to go through a sporting competition undefeated and then win overall

Women in Sport

September 6th 2006 08:16
It is so disheartening to see that here in the year 2006, men are still given dominance when it comes to televising and promoting sport.

The Australian Government needs to do something about increasing the promotion of women in sport

It's a topical issue at the moment, should the community know where pedophiles live?

I find it interesting that the media is pushing for details of pedophiles and their locations to be publicly known. Yes, you have to feel for the victims and no-one wants any child to be sexually abused, but how come the same publicity is not given to murderers or other serious criminals when they are released from prison. Surely, if the community should know the whereabouts of pedophiles, this same approach should be adopted to murderers, people who commit serious assaults, rapists etc

Regional Media

September 2nd 2006 00:46
With recent discussion on the new media framework in Australia, I must pose the question: Why do media companies in Australia neglect their regional newsrooms? Residents in regional areas deserve to receive local news just as much as their city counterparts. Yet, in many country towns in Australia, local newspapers, instead of reporting what’s happening in their local community, publish press releases.

Many regional newsrooms have only cadet journalists in them with no editor. So how do the cadet journalists receive their training? Cadetships are meant to be like traineeships. But many cadet journalists in regional newsrooms are forced to take on the role of editor without the recognition and the salary that this position deserves. Even though this is their first job as a journalist, cadet journalists are expected to know how to run a newsroom and publish quality newspapers in regional areas. This results in many journalists in Australia who don’t know the essentials of being a journalist or people who could’ve been brilliant journalists who leave this career path due to the stress and lack of recognition in regional newsrooms. This is all due to big media companies who are so motivated by profit, they forget what a regional newspaper is all about, and that is to produce quality local news
