Perks for Politicians
November 8th 2006 05:39
It is absolutely appalling the amount of perks our Australian politicians get. Yes, they work hard but so do a lot of Australians. But, the rest of us, don't get free air travel for our family for the rest of our lives, free usage of mobile phones, a huge salary and the list goes on.
And yet with all these benefits, they still seem unable to solve Australia's major issues like water, health, education and roads.
There are also no solutions to public transport problems in Australia, the appalling unemployment system, aged care shortages, skills shortages, and the need to stop the increasing rate of obesity in this country.
The increasing costs of fuel and groceries as well as the constant interest rate rises are making it extremely difficult for the average Australian to get by. But, while average Australians are struggling to make ends meet, our politicians are living extremely comfortable lives. When times are tough, why aren't their enormous perks reduced? Then, maybe they would know how bad Australians are suffering.
Australians could probably live with the amount of perks politicians get if they provided solutions to the major issues affecting them.
But, still, the amount of money politicians make and the perks they receive, are ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason for it. They shouldn't receive all of these benefits after they have finished working in politics. A reasonable amount of superannuation is all they should get, like everyone else.
It is absolutely absurd that our politicians have more than one free phone. No person is capable of answering seven or eight phones at the same time, so why have them. Money is precious to many people so should not be wasted by the government - share it around to the people who need it the most.
How can our politicians live with themselves? While they are living the high life, the Australian citizens which they meant to represent, can't afford to feed themselves or their family properly, they can't afford a roof over their heads, they can't afford to give their children a decent education or to fly to see their families interstate, or fill up their vehicles, and the list goes on.
Politicians that would get my vote, and a lot of other people, are the ones who would do the job properly and get paid a reasonable amount of money and some small perks and that is it.
