September 11
September 11th 2006 09:39
Is anyone else sick of hearing about the terrorist attack in America on September 11, 2001?
Don’t get me wrong, it was a huge tragedy. But, why does the media have to run a story on this event every year.
What about medical developments that have saved the lives of thousands of people? Where is the publicity on the anniversaries of these developments?
Why are we promoting what the terrorists did? We should be sending out a message that people are only remembered in this country for positive moves and not for such a tragedic event?
The constant reminder would have to make it difficult for families and friends of loved ones who died in the terrorist attack to try and move on from this tragedy.
It would also make it difficult for survivors to somehow overcome their horrific ordeal.
It was really disheartening to hear on ABC radio today so many people who should have been able to enjoy their birthday on September 11, but can’t due to the constant reminder of the terrorist attack in the media. One person was a little boy who didn’t feel like he should be celebrating his birthday when so many people died on this day five years ago. It’s depressing to hear that people are reluctant to celebrate life.
The media is responsible. Instead of continuing what WAS a great story for journalists to report on, they could be looking for other good stories. News is meant to be exactly that, news, not something that happened five years ago.
This is a real concern, coupled with the proposed media laws. We need diversity in the media. All Australians deserve to be up-to-date with the latest news and not hear the same story over and over. For more on this issue, see my regional media blog.

It was an easy story when it happened five years ago and it's an easy story now. Journalists don't care, so long as their publishers publish what they write, news commentators don't care so long as their producers put them on air.
It might have been devestating, but really, in the grand scheme of things it was little more than a drop in the ocean. There are far greater tragedies that occur very often, they don't get the attention they deserve just because they aren't in first world countries.
THough Ithought people would be desensitized to all this by now but apparently not. Perhaps its just a fruitless desire to feel disadvantaged, or to feel like you belong to something, I dunno. I feel sorry for what happened to those people, but its 5 years on. I'm moving on, there ar eother disasters for me to start thinking about, its over for those people, they have been compensated and are probably undergoing counselling for what they experienced. THeir moment in the spotlight is over and its time the media did share that sentiment and lay off their back so they can like the rest of us get on with their lives.

If they insist on saturating us with 9/11 each year, Instead of recycling the same old song, at least the media should try to investigate the facts and get to the bottom of what happened.
There are still so many unanswered questions about that day that still need answering.

Real Crash
A bunch of really nasty creeps are around this ABC special, "The Path to 9/11". Including the financier John Train, fundi porno maker, Cunningham, and ex-LaRouchistas Ken Mandel and Dan Poulin, who turned "state-evidence" and are now working for the neo-cons.
They want the U.S., with Australia participating naturally to nuke Iran, and start a 100-yrs war.
If you want to stop terrorism, the nations must cooperate for economic development, dry out the extremists, and the financiers who may manipulate them behind the scenes.

JohnDoe - Thanks for your comment. I agree with you but the follow-up stories doesn't have the same appeal to the media as the actual disaster. They should investigate and give us some news instead of repeating the same information and images.
Howard - Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that there needs to be a united front in stopping terrorism. This needs to include the media. They are helping potential terrorists by showing how much media coverage they get if they perform such an act.

design timelines for modern history. I instructed them to place on the left side all the important things
that had happened to them since they were born e.g. when they moved, when their siblings were
born after them etc. I then said that they should place on the right side of the line all that they
could think of that was going on in the world at the same time. Most succeeded in filling out the
left side, their personal stuff. Almost all failed to fill out the right side except for one event, 9/11.
That's impact for you.

It was heart breaking to see the family members mourn not in private but in public under the scrutiny of the media.
What really bothers me is that - how come no memorial has been set up for these people... the design for the memorial site was endorsed in 2003, redefine in 2006...(been 5 yrs since it happened?!!?) Hear will be completed only by 2012... Hope I'll be alive to witness it!!!
May the souls RIP!
