Skills Shortages

August 2nd 2008 03:25
I've been so bogged down in work lately that I haven't had time to write my blogs. A lot of industries in Australia are suffering with the inability to attract suitably qualified staff. This causes a lot of pressure on existing staff because they have to pick up the extra workload. We are all living really busy lifestyles which leaves us not doing the things that matter like spending time with loved ones and having relaxing time for ourselves.

The Federal Government and Kevin Rudd needs to get their act together and do something to help working Australians and Australian businesses. Rudd's "education revolution" has merit because we need to entice school students to go into the careers where there are skills shortages.

This could mean financial assistance for students studying careers at university known for their skills shortages such as the medical and teaching fields. Rural Australia is particularly finding it difficult to attract qualified staff. You hear of cases where physical education teachers are teaching maths just because rural schools cannot get a maths teacher. These students are our future so we need to start investing in them so our society overall improves.

There is so much money being spent on sport yet this nation seems to be unable to find the funds to invest in our educational system or our businesses. There should be no unemployed people while we have so many jobs begging for qualifed people in Australia. Parents and teachers should be encouraging our students into industries where there are jobs available.

Australia we need to get our act together and we need to do it now to invest in the future of this country.

I do think the government has some good ideas about this problem. However, I meet many people who are skilled and educated but are still in casual employment that doesn't utilise their skills, qualifications or, in many cases, experience.

The trouble seems to me - and I keep hearing this over and over - is the long employment process which is more often than not contracted out to recruitment agencies. By the time a shortlist is compiled for the client(s) the company(s) have usually changed their minds.

It's a tired old stoy but true - if a company can get you to carry the overload (and it sounds as if you are doing this) there will no doubt be a long delay in employing someone else.

Thanks Janet for your comment. It is true in some instances but there are others that companies desperately advertise and re-advertise positions to receive no applicants at all or no applicants with the necessary qualifications or skills to perform the job. I know of many instances where this has happened and the companies haven't just advertised the position lcally but all over Australia with no luck.

I still think that it is the recruitment system that falls short here. Many of the applications end up in some cyperspace. There are plenty of people out there willing and able but they just can't find the right route to get there.

Yes but there are also a lot of positions out there that people just don't have the skills or qualifications necessary to complete the job.
