Smoking Ban in Mall
September 12th 2006 01:24
It’s great to see a mayor stand up for present and future residents.
Launceston Mayor Ivan Dean wants to ban smoking in the Brisbane Street Mall. This proposal is believed to be the first in Tasmania.
This mayor should be congratulated on his initiative and foresight in making Launceston a comfortable place to visit and live without putting up with unnecessary health risks. People who don’t want to smoke and die of cancer should not have to put up with the smell of cigarettes and the danger they cause.
The Launceston Council needs to vote to implement this ban as soon as possible and other councils need to follow suit.
It’s about time that our elected representatives really make a stance on smoking. It’s a health issue that can be easily avoided.
You should be able to go into a public place and feel safe and not have any health concerns.
We all know that passive smoking is dangerous so why do we allow it?
We have laws in place for murder but for some reason smokers in public places, who ARE contributing to the deaths of so many people, are allowed to continue with no punishment.
The Australian Government’s Health Insite website (www.healthinsite.gov.au/topics/Passive_Smoking) states that “Passive smoking causes lower respiratory illness in children and lung cancer in adults and contributes to the symptoms of asthma in children. Passive smoking may also cause coronary heart disease in adults.”
Whenever people smoke, including in a public mall, all the others around them are breathing in the same harmful substances as the smokers themselves.
So, therefore, governments have a responsibility and a duty to protect non-smokers from these harmful substances.
Launceston Mayor Ivan Dean is fulfilling his duty as mayor by putting forward the proposal to ban smoking in the city’s mall.
Hopefully, the council will support its mayor, and vote to implement this ban.
