Steve Irwin’s Memorial Service

September 13th 2006 06:44
It’s fitting that a public memorial service is being held for Steve Irwin. He was such a public figure not only in Australia but overseas.

However, I think it’s rude to force people to pay to go to his memorial service. His death shouldn’t lead to financial gain for his family, his business - Australia Zoo, or his Wildlife Warriors fund.

It seems to be a bit of a publicity stunt for the memorial service to be held at Australia Zoo. With such a high profile figure gone, one could imagine how hard it would be to keep the profits going at Australia Zoo. A lot of people would have gone to the zoo to try to get a glimpse of Steve Irwin in action with the crocodiles.

There has also been a fund set up to aid Australia Zoo as well as to pay for the educational costs of Steve Irwin’s two children.

But when an average person dies, there is no-one collecting money to help pay for their family or business or personal interests.

Funerals and memorial services are about celebrating the life of the person who has just died. They are not about financial gain.

What about all the money Steve Irwin would have made during his work? As a father and being in the dangerous business he was, surely he would have considered the financial impacts on his family and business when he died. All you have to do is put on the television and there is always an advertisement about life insurance.

It’s not up to Australians to pay for these costs for Steve Irwin.

It’s also quite sad to hear about the death of Peter Brock in the same week as the Crocodile Hunter. But why is there more media coverage for Steve Irwin than Peter Brock? They were both public identities that did this country proud.

One person’s life should not be given more value than another person’s life.

Sorry to have missed it, but Steve, if you're listening from the heavens, this one's for you. It's an original song I wrote and recorded in your honor:

How completely insensitive could a person be?? Shame on you. Did you not think of his beautiful children and wife before you posted such a story full of crap. Steves life was the Australia zoo and it was ever so fitting that his memorial should be there too. A place where his wife and his children will allows remember him. My heart aches for Terri and all you can do is try to stir up controversy. I pity you.

OMG. that is the meanest thing anyone could have written.
I'm sure Steve didn't ask for everybody to pay for his two children's education.
And anyway, the tickets were FREE.

just so you kmow...ur the first person who i've heard of to be happy about steve irwin dying.

if YOU don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

the poor guy is dead and all u do is blame him for living life the way he did. You don't make other people's choices. Just because you didn't want to work as a croc hunter, then respect his decision...its the way he lived his life, and we're all proud of him for it.

And also, Steve doesn't have a miraculous hand that FORCES people to pay. He lets them choose. It's your choice.

It's quite obvious that you don't have much of a heart, or is it just that word - jealousy?

To all the anonymous comments, thanks for your input. If you read my Crocodile Hunter Dies blog, you would see that I too really admired Steve Irwin and the work that he did. He was an amazing bloke, full of enthusiasm.

However, according to media reports, people attending the memorial service were FORCED to make a donation to his Wildlife Warriors fund. According to the ABC News Online on September 5, a fund has been set up to "aid Steve's Australia Zoo in Beewah, Australia as well as educational support for Bindi and Bob Irwin." I found this appalling. I don't think Steve would have wanted money to be made through his death. He worked so hard for conservation and these efforts should have been celebrated, instead of worrying about making money for a family that is rich.

For the anonymous person, who said, I needed to get a job, thank you for your concern, but I do have a full-time job and I have worked hard all of my life.

He was one of the most respected conservationists in this world today if not the most respect and if i can achieve just an ounce of what steve set out and did then my life will be an amazing thing.

People who say he harmed the animals, he never did he helped them survive from what some of you humans are doing to their environments right this minute!

I will always have irwin as my role model and my regards are with ur family mate. I really do appreciate everything you have taught me about animals and i hope to dedicate my life to them as well and i will do my upmost to carry on the Australian way

Rest in peace mate, u will be missed...

I dont know about anyone else but, i took steve's death very bad and i still am.. even though i have never met him. my dream was always to catch a croc and set if free,, with steve and his crew. now that he is gone,, my dream is just to be able to go to his zoo and see the miracle he created and left behind for all of the world to appreciate... its probably a dream that will never come true but, i like to think that i,m alot like the irwin family. i love all animals and if someone tries to hurt them, well then they better watch out ... as for terri and the kids, i wish you all the best, and thanks for giving all of us something to remember steve by.....my love and condolences on your loses.. i will not remember steve by his tragic death... but by his amazing life...
