What do you eat?

October 24th 2006 05:50
The cost of groceries is one of the top five financial concerns of Australians, according to media reports recently. This statistic probably wouldn't surprise anyone. However, it was news to find out that a lot of Australians thought that it was more expensive to buy healthy food than to purchase takeaway.

This is alarming news and undoubtedly contributes to the high obesity rate in Australia.

One could speculate on the huge pressure this would cause to our health system in future years when the health problems caused by obesity come into effect.

This is why the government needs to act on this trend immediately before it has cost the country a lot of money. Something needs to be done to stop the ever increasing costs of groceries.

The government should engage in publicity campaigns, promoting the comparative costs of healthy and junk foods. The campaigns need to promote the benefits of healthy food compared to the potential health risks of junk food.

Sport and being active also needs to be promoted in these publicity campaigns.

The cost of groceries coupled with the ever increasing cost of fuel and the drought is making it extremely difficult for Australian families.

The Federal Government could look at introducing some serious tax breaks, not just for the highest bracket, but for everyone paying tax. This would give much welcome relief to Australians.

Funds should not be poured into leisure activities like sport and the arts until all the basics are covered. Australians need to be able to feed themselves, have a roof over their heads, have reliable water, health and education systems, and be able to get a job following school with ease. When these issues are solved then surplus funds should be spent on sport and culture.

It is a sad message we are sending our future generations that healthy food is too expensive and therefore we need to eat junk food.
